Chelmsford the county town

Asbestos removal in Chelmsford

Chelmsford is Essex's county town rather than a village on the fringe of it, and that changes what we usually find: more terraces and conversions near the centre, more estate housing around the edges, and fewer of the standalone farm outbuildings that show up further out in the county. We are based in Grays, not Chelmsford, and we travel for every job.

  • Over 12 years in asbestos removal
  • Qualified & insured
  • HSE Compliant
  • Most jobs completed within a day

The work, whatever the building

A city centre terrace and a house on the edge of town are different jobs mainly because of access, not because of what the material is. We have not worked a named job in Chelmsford and are not going to claim one: this is what we do, not a record of where we have done it.

What Essex County Council will and will not take

Chelmsford sits inside Essex County Council's area for waste disposal, so the county's rules are the ones that apply here.

Recycling centres
Essex County Council does not accept asbestos at any of its recycling centres, and it is not taken at the kerbside either.
The alternative
A subsidised household collection is available for each household in Essex, every financial year, booked through the council's own request form. Subsidised, not free: the council does not publish the figure.
How to book it
Through Essex County Council's online request form, or by contacting the council directly if that route does not work for you.

We are not the council and cannot book its collection for you. If what you have is small and already bonded into cement, that route may be all you need, and we would rather tell you that than take the job anyway.

Leave it, seal it, or take it off

Leave it where it is

Cement sheeting in good condition, not crumbling and not being drilled or broken, is not an emergency. The fibres are bound into the cement, and the safest thing is often to do nothing at all. We will tell you that on the phone.

Seal it instead

A roof or panel that is weathered but still whole can be sealed rather than removed, which costs less and puts the decision off for years.

Take it off

Worth doing when the material is cracked or shedding, when you are extending or selling, or when it has to come down before other work can start.

Already down

If someone has already taken it off and stacked it, that is collection, not removal, and it costs less because the hardest part is done.

What we handle

Note

Cement, coatings, tiles and the more delicate materials too

Cement sheeting, Artex, floor tiles, gutters and water tanks are ours directly. Sprayed coatings, pipe or boiler lagging and asbestos insulating board need more care. Soffits and anything in a loft do not get a price until someone has actually looked, because cement sheet and insulating board look identical there.

Whatever you have found, tell us and we will tell you what it is. If it needs somebody with a licence, we will tell you that too, and what to look for when you are choosing one.

How a Chelmsford job runs

  • 01

    Send a photo

One clear shot and a postcode tells us the material and roughly what the access is like before anyone drives out.

  • 02

    We travel to you

Chelmsford is a normal day’s work from Grays, not a special trip that changes how we price the job.

  • 03

Taken down whole where we can

Sheets come off bolted and lifted down rather than broken, because breaking is what puts fibres in the air.

  • 04

    Wrapped and loaded by hand

Double-wrapped and labelled on site, then carried to the van rather than tipped in.

  • 05

    Paperwork follows

The waste goes to a facility licensed to take it, and your consignment note follows by email.

What Chelmsford callers ask us

How much does it roughly cost to remove asbestos?

We quote per job rather than off a rate card, because access changes the price more than area does. Send a photo and a postcode and you will get a real number back, not a range, and there is no charge for the quote itself.

Can I get asbestos removed for free?

Not from us, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. Essex County Council runs a subsidised household collection, which is not the same as free, and it only covers what you have already taken down and bagged yourself. If the job is taking something off a building, that is not something a council collection does.

What is the 3-5-7 rule for asbestos sampling?

That is a laboratory identification protocol a surveyor uses when a sample needs testing, not something we carry out ourselves. Send us a photo and we will tell you what we think it is, and what to look for if you decide to get a sample tested properly.

What if I accidentally removed asbestos tiles?

Stop, and do not sweep, vacuum or brush the area. Once tiles are up they are hazardous waste whether the removal was planned or not, and the same rules apply: they cannot go in a bin. Collection takes it from wherever it is sitting now.

The rest of Essex, and beyond

Chelmsford is one town inside the Essex area we cover from Grays. We also work across Kent and London.

Send a photo and a postcode

That is enough to get a real answer back. Or call, and talk it through with someone who has done this before.
