Basildon a New Town, from Grays

Asbestos removal in Basildon

Basildon was built as a New Town from the 1950s onward, which means more standardised postwar construction and fewer of the older Victorian conversions you get elsewhere in Essex. That build era is exactly when asbestos cement was everywhere. We work from Grays and travel out for every job.

What we handle

Note

Cement, coatings, tiles and the more delicate materials too

Cement sheeting, Artex, floor tiles, gutters and water tanks are ours directly. Sprayed coatings, pipe or boiler lagging and asbestos insulating board need more care, and some of it needs a licensed contractor. We will tell you which, and what to look for in one. Soffits and anything in a loft do not get a price until someone has actually looked, because cement sheet and insulating board look identical there.

Whatever you have found, tell us and we will take it from there.

Common jobs on postwar builds

This is a description of the type of building, not a record of a job we have done in Basildon. We have not worked a named job here and are not going to claim one.

What actually changes the price

We are not going to print a number we cannot stand behind. These are the things that move it.

  • How much there is. A single roof is a different job from a roof plus outbuildings.
  • Whether it is whole. Sheets already cracked or in pieces take longer and need more care.
  • How we reach it. A garage we can park beside is cheaper than one behind a locked side gate.
  • Whether it is already down. Collection of stacked sheeting costs less than a full removal.

Still up, or already down

Still on the building

A roof, a shed side or a run of guttering still fixed in place. That is removal: taken down whole where we can, wrapped on site, and carried away.

Already down and stacked

Sheets someone has already taken off and left in the garden. That is collection, and it costs less because the hardest part is already done.

What Essex County Council will and will not take

  • 01

    Not at a recycling centre

Essex County Council does not accept asbestos at any of its recycling centres, and it is not taken at the kerbside either.

  • 02

    A subsidised collection instead

Available for each household in Essex, every financial year, booked through the council's own request form. Subsidised, not free: the council does not publish the figure.

  • 03

    Booked through the council

Through Essex County Council's online request form, or by contacting the council directly.

  • 04

    What that leaves

If what you have is bigger than the collection scheme covers, or is still fixed to the building, that is where we come in.

What Basildon callers ask us

How much does it cost to get someone to remove asbestos?

We quote per job, not off a rate card, because access changes the price more than area does. Send a photo and a postcode and you will get a real number back.

How can I dispose of asbestos in Essex County Council?

Essex County Council does not accept it at any recycling centre or in the kerbside collection. It instead runs a subsidised household collection, available once every financial year through its own online request form, which is not the same as free.

Can you get fined for removing asbestos?

The removal itself is not the part that gets people in trouble; how the waste is disposed of afterwards is. Asbestos has to be handled as hazardous waste, and putting it in a normal bin or fly-tipping it is where the legal risk actually sits.

Can I get asbestos removed for free?

Not from us, and the council's own collection is subsidised rather than free. It also only covers what you have already taken down yourself, not a roof or wall still fixed in place.

The rest of Essex, and beyond

Basildon is one town inside the Essex area we cover from Grays. We also work across Kent and London.

That is enough for a real answer back. Or call, and talk it through with someone who has done this before.
